[When the camera gets turned on, the first thing to note is that Ivar's face is streaked in blood that has only just started to dry in places. Someone's been out worshiping with the natives in a fashion very familiar to a Viking. If y'all hadn't gotten the impression Ivar was a bloodthirsty barbarian from a bygone era, the imagery is definitely reinforced with the dripping red streaks on his face. Also is that some around his lips as well? Has he been drinking the stuff too? Honestly, though, he seems quite pleased by what's been going on even if everyone else might be disturbed by the casual slaughter of the cows. His tone starts off very serious, since worship is important where he's from.]

About time this place started getting some proper worship going. I know most of you all are from soft places-- [The scorn in his tone is obvious.] --but blood sacrifices are always the best when giving due diligence to these gods where I am from. Blood demands blood, especially if you want them to be on your side in battle, or to favor you at all. It's really not all that different then slaughtering animals for food, just with more rituals and rites to it.

[Then he switches back to his usual tone that ranges somewhere between insanity and half-truths end tends to indulge in.]

It's a good thing we finally got the right sort of animals around here. Otherwise, I might have had to resort to sacrificing one of you. [He muses for a moment before laughing.] I'm joking of course! [Beat.] Human sacrifices only work if they're willing participants.

Well, let's just say that she was glad it involved the sacrificing of cluckbeasts to the gods as opposed to the alternatives that might have been around.]

Ya know... pretty sure those gods didn't actually ask for it. That Honir guy's a lot softer than you make the others out to be. It was a good show. Kind of gratuitous, but what can you do when you kill a moo beast without doing it properly.

Trick is, if they diiiidn't ask for it, who told these people to kill a cluck beast like that and why?

I've heard of blood sacrifices before. But I don't understand. Did the gods give us the animals? Isn't it rude to take a gift and destroy it?

[Oh, it's the voice of that nice whatever-she-is (forest spirit?). At least she didn't immediately jump on him for mentioning how gross it is, so she gets answered without any condescension or sarcasm.]

Where I am from, food is a precious commodity. When you spill the blood of a creature, you're thanking the gods for providing the creatures in the first place, and asking their blessing that they will send more. It's not destroying it, it's giving it back to them in another form. Like a transformation.

Considering they're not used to mortals or being in the form of one, they might not realize the benefits of sacrifice just yet. It can be a teaching moment.

[ Peter is still in his ship and it's not hard to tell his opinion when it comes to the current sacrifice issue. The Benatar is filled with chickens, pigs, and even three different cows. They're safer here than outside. He's even holding a piggy in his lap, that he named Bowie, when he answers his roommate's video. The guardian tries to keep his voice even and respectful but it's not hard to tell that Peter's deeply upset. He's always wearing his heart on one's sleeve when it comes to pain. ]

No offense to your culture, Ivar, but have the Gods here actually asked for any of this? Not Sigyn nor Honir strike me like the kind of people who would enjoy seeing animals slaughtered like that, more so considering his fondness for the horses. [ Then again, Honir is slightly gullible because he's fascinated by everything. It worries Peter that Honir could agree to the sacrifices if he thinks it's what the wanderers might want. ] The animals showed up out of the blue, how do we know they're not a present FROM the gods? Or from Igrdag...Iddres...their shiny tree? For all we know, we could be offending them every time one is killed. Have you seen Skadi mad? Because I didn't but I know for sure I don't want to either.

[ Peter hopes is all a misunderstanding because he had started to trust a few of the Gods and now is rethinking his opinion. He will be immensely disappointed -but not surprised- if it turns out the city was only a set up of them to gain sacrifices. He squints a little, paying close attention to Ivar's mouth. ]

Is that blood? Buddy, drinking it can't be healthy. Who knows where the cows and pigs really came from.[ That said, the last part of Ivar's statement that gets his attention even more. ] Humans rituals back in your home are voluntary? How does that work? What do you get in exchange? Luck in battle or...

[Since it's Peter responding, Ivar actually responds in a serious fashion instead of full of snark like he might with something else. Religious talk tends to get him to talk in a frank and solemn manner. His religion is no joke.]

If you are given a gift, you should show appreciation for it. I understand things are very different where you are from, but consider this: food is always scarce in the North. It is a precious commodity and shouldn't be wasted. By sacrificing an animal in the name of the gods, spilling its blood on the ground, and then eating it, you have shown thankfulness towards the gods that provided it, and ask their blessings that more be sent to you. To ignore their contribution is a great insult.

Ingesting it shows willingness to commit to the sacrifice. [His tongue snakes out and he licks at the blood on the corner of his mouth, a grin on his face.]

Human sacrifices provide favor from the gods for the next nine years. Normally it's nine human beings, nine bulls, nine goats, you get the idea, all sacrificed at once. [So they don't do this on a whim. It's a very serious rite.] Being a sacrifice is a great honor, it's as worthy as falling in battle to die that way. We sacrificed a willing warrior the last time before we raided England and had nothing but great success there.

So we organize it better. Sacrifice isn't bad, sometimes it's a part of the fabric of life. I highly doubt they're going to sacrifice every single one of the cows. And if they do, then we need to have a serious discussion on the topic of moderation.

[Contrary to popular belief, it's not the killing of the animals that makes Josie squeamish. It happens in some of the darker magics, and while she's never been fond of it, nor has it been the kind of magic she's actively practiced, but he's not wrong.

Blood magic is powerful magic.

At the same time, there are other things to consider.]

If we're going to do it, we need to be smart about it. These animals just appeared and we don't want them to disappear because we went crazy and abused this resource. We need to make sure there are rules regulating the use of them, not just sacrificing them and needlessly or wasting pieces.

That being said, since we do have access to the gods, we might as well ask them if this is what they want. If you're arguing that this is to earn their favor, then maybe we should ask them what that entails.

[ For this, Loki has donned his horns. It's not something he's done in a week or two but it feels appropriate given the address he's decided to make on the pagan post. Rubbing his temples at first, he sinks down to sit on a log, situated on the fringes of Laufey's woodlands. He's been out with his spiderhorse, Raindrop, who can be seen munching in the background of the trees as her owner frowns. ]

Speaking as a Norse god, not of this version of Asgard but another, I'd like to have some basic facts noted. These aren't things many of you will like to hear, but they ring true for me and this is entirely my own perspective. I'd like to think I have enough experience to weigh in, by now.

[ Here we go; he's not looking forward to this but it needs to be said, so many Wanderers are unaware of so much. ]

Sacrifices did help strengthen the gods I knew, the power that manifested in real-time had genuine effects. Much as we don't die off if you choose not to believe in us, a god is only as strong as the hearts of those who adore them, the same way a child is empowered by the faith its parents show in it, only in reverse. The same went for prayers. I can't anymore, but we were always able to hear those who prayed to us and it was our decision whether to ignore those calls or take heed. The words were spoken from afar but they still reached us, the same way a sentimental sacrifice could. I hope that comparison helps make sense of the mumbo-jumbo involved.

For those of you who own a practical soul, the fact of the matter is that we ought to continue the sacrifices for two reasons. Firstly, a sacrifice is a matter of respect, whether your own hair is cut in a simpler gesture or the life-blood of a beast soaks the earth, both hold courage in the doing. Secondly, as the gods here are in mortal guise we don't yet know whether the sacrifices aren't helping strengthen them, and between a choice of living in a city that belongs to weaklings or the most powerful pantheon ever to exist — I may be biased but, well, it's been true in every other reality I've visited Asgard — I would rather assist our gods ahead of time. If a dozen dragons or the rock-trolls or the armies of the Jotnar try to kill us all in our sleep, we won't be able to retroactively place power in the hands of Odin to protect us.

[ It's a lot to get out, rote and somewhat dull in tone. Once finished, Loki takes off his horns to look at them contemplatively, then directly into the view-screen of the bracelet. ]

If there is one thing I truly believe, it is that for all his faults and fumblings along the way, the All-Father will be the last one to ever let Asgard fall. Odin will always protect it to his dying breath, no matter which Odin that may be, whether he doesn't need the help or otherwise. I suppose, what this all boils down to is ...

[ He pauses, jaw working as he grinds his teeth. Not wanting to seem like an infallible loyalist, even with how obtuse most of the Wanderers are when it comes to his reputation and how easy it would be to lie to them, there are still some lines that Loki (in any life, good or evil or neutral in nature) will not cross. The Trickster looks uncharacteristically solemn. ]

I'm saying I will not contribute to any possibility of Asgard falling, whether I was born here or not.

[ It is strange and a million realities from the real thing, but Asgard is his home. ]

My concern lies with when sacrifices shift from animal to human. Far as I understand it, there are no laws like any kingdoms we're familiar with. No justice to answer injustice, should anyone in this realm overstep. Has there been murder, conquest, executions, or punishment for thievery and rape before we came? Certainly there's no mortal king or queen of the land to answer to, which does not mean we make the decision of whether this is acceptable in the gods' stead.

[ None of this means she's happy to see carcasses and blood everywhere. Truthfully, there's been some matters she's bitten her tongue over, for she wouldn't tolerate them under her reign. ]

Ignoring human sacrifice because that's definitely not happening. [Yeah, not up for debate for any god.] There doesn't need to be this much killing when we've had only one battle and that was months ago. Pretty sure the locals have us set for the next three years with all that they've done. Not to mention there's no way to store all this meat. [Salting possibly, or curing. But it doesn't seem like something the locals will be versed in. And honestly, Finn has no idea about these sorts of things either.]

Nine cows really isn't all that much. We tend to sacrifice that exact amount every seven years or so. If done properly, the next one should be much smaller. [He snorts at the mention of meat.] Clearly, you've never slaughtered animals before. If we start now, we can preserve almost all the meat.

[ The whole display is as macabre as was opening the door in the morning and coming face to face with a literal bloodbath staining the streets, walls and doors red. Jim might not be a stranger to the concept of animal sacrifices, and yes, he realizes that it's still very prevalent in some alien cultures even in his own reality, but that doesn't mean he can just take that all in without batting an eye.

He's also pretty sure he won't be able to reason with the man showing on the screen. That's not his intent, either, as he seems to be addressing everyone else at large. ]

I realize that the animals given to us were few in number, and not very varied, but I really do think that the best way to get more of them is to actually herd and farm them, and create the ideal conditions for them to reproduce. Instead we're seeing these animals getting violently slaughtered as "gifts" for gods who don't even seem to understand the concept behind these sacrifices.

First of all, we don't even know if they were the ones to give us the animals to begin with. Secondly, I haven't seen them demanding that blood be spilled in their honor. You can say all you want, but most people, if not everyone, just seem to be using these sacrifices as an excuse to revel in the violence and blood shedding. And so far all I see is the number of animals dwindling, and everyone who has any common sense is just hiding away whatever poor creatures they can find, without being able to do anything productive with them.

This isn't going to get us anywhere. If we want more animals, then we should set up a farm and actually work to that end, instead of smearing blood all over the place and expect magical beings to just spawn new animals and leave them at our doorstep. You can believe whatever gods you want, but no god is going to just solve all your problems and do all your work for you just because you spilled some blood. This isn't religion, it's just needless violence for the sheer pleasure of it, and it's absolutely wasteful. I'm not even going to touch on the point of animal cruelty even though this is really touching the line there, and in the end we can't even use the meat, since it's been passed around the city, gathering who knows how many germs and bacteria, and by now carrying all kinds of disease.

Also, as I'm sure you all must realize by now, not everyone here is comfortable with this display. Personally, I would rather this wouldn't happen at all, period, but if the gods eventually decide that animal sacrifices will be allowed, I'd prefer to be able to go wherever I want to without having to be forced to see this display of violence.

This also has me thinking that this city needs rules and laws, preferably sooner rather than later. Otherwise we'll be killing people next and offering their blood to the gods, or hurting each other. Hell, if some of us decide to build a farm, who's to stop others from breaking in and stealing away the animals there to "sacrifice" them too? What measures are there in place to prevent murder, rape, theft or violence? I realize all the people and gods here are fairly young, but that's all the more reason why these laws should be established now. And it doesn't look like the gods will be the ones putting them in place without the proper input.

I can only hope there are enough reasonable people around to want to weigh in and help with this. I'm definitely willing to work together on it.

Sigyn's district has a farmland. The Grearc Expanse or something like that? I'm terrible at Norse names. But the thing is, we have the installations already, it's a matter of organization and implementation.

And I agree that we need some basics, even if it's just a general: murder, raping and pillaging is baaaad.
