Video; Where's The Laughter in Slaughter?

[When the camera gets turned on, the first thing to note is that Ivar's face is streaked in blood that has only just started to dry in places. Someone's been out worshiping with the natives in a fashion very familiar to a Viking. If y'all hadn't gotten the impression Ivar was a bloodthirsty barbarian from a bygone era, the imagery is definitely reinforced with the dripping red streaks on his face. Also is that some around his lips as well? Has he been drinking the stuff too? Honestly, though, he seems quite pleased by what's been going on even if everyone else might be disturbed by the casual slaughter of the cows. His tone starts off very serious, since worship is important where he's from.]

About time this place started getting some proper worship going. I know most of you all are from soft places-- [The scorn in his tone is obvious.] --but blood sacrifices are always the best when giving due diligence to these gods where I am from. Blood demands blood, especially if you want them to be on your side in battle, or to favor you at all. It's really not all that different then slaughtering animals for food, just with more rituals and rites to it.

[Then he switches back to his usual tone that ranges somewhere between insanity and half-truths end tends to indulge in.]

It's a good thing we finally got the right sort of animals around here. Otherwise, I might have had to resort to sacrificing one of you. [He muses for a moment before laughing.] I'm joking of course! [Beat.] Human sacrifices only work if they're willing participants.

[OOC: This post is for a general discussion, so feel free to have threads amongst all the characters and thread-jacking rather then just talking with Ivar. Do let me know if you do want a specific thread with him! He has rather...strong opinions about this.]

[ Sure, some supernatural things do exist where Chizuru comes from, but magic is a whole new thing to her. So she'll definitely listen to someone more knowledgable about it like her. ]

Eh, maybe we can talk to them about getting it cleaned up afterwards. They aren't bandits, the stench tends to get to most people.

One would hope. [ The ice in his tone is just a single step away from him actually gutting a person. Not that he would do that. He was trying to be good here. ] It does make me wonder if the gods have any idea that this would happen at all.

Pfffffft, have you met Honir? I am pretty sure he's just confused. And I think if Odin gave a fuck about the rest of us, it was trying to work out how to give less of one than he already does.

I have. I spent several hours trying to get him to stop wearing his hanfu like he was a trained courtesan. I barely talk to any of the others.

[ She snickers. ]

Odin's alright, just kind of blunt, doesn't like messing around. Totally going to annoy the heck of Skadi if I have anything to say about it. I'll tell ya how that goes.

Yeah but...if she likes animals she might like that.

[ The whole display is as macabre as was opening the door in the morning and coming face to face with a literal bloodbath staining the streets, walls and doors red. Jim might not be a stranger to the concept of animal sacrifices, and yes, he realizes that it's still very prevalent in some alien cultures even in his own reality, but that doesn't mean he can just take that all in without batting an eye.

He's also pretty sure he won't be able to reason with the man showing on the screen. That's not his intent, either, as he seems to be addressing everyone else at large. ]

I realize that the animals given to us were few in number, and not very varied, but I really do think that the best way to get more of them is to actually herd and farm them, and create the ideal conditions for them to reproduce. Instead we're seeing these animals getting violently slaughtered as "gifts" for gods who don't even seem to understand the concept behind these sacrifices.

First of all, we don't even know if they were the ones to give us the animals to begin with. Secondly, I haven't seen them demanding that blood be spilled in their honor. You can say all you want, but most people, if not everyone, just seem to be using these sacrifices as an excuse to revel in the violence and blood shedding. And so far all I see is the number of animals dwindling, and everyone who has any common sense is just hiding away whatever poor creatures they can find, without being able to do anything productive with them.

This isn't going to get us anywhere. If we want more animals, then we should set up a farm and actually work to that end, instead of smearing blood all over the place and expect magical beings to just spawn new animals and leave them at our doorstep. You can believe whatever gods you want, but no god is going to just solve all your problems and do all your work for you just because you spilled some blood. This isn't religion, it's just needless violence for the sheer pleasure of it, and it's absolutely wasteful. I'm not even going to touch on the point of animal cruelty even though this is really touching the line there, and in the end we can't even use the meat, since it's been passed around the city, gathering who knows how many germs and bacteria, and by now carrying all kinds of disease.

Also, as I'm sure you all must realize by now, not everyone here is comfortable with this display. Personally, I would rather this wouldn't happen at all, period, but if the gods eventually decide that animal sacrifices will be allowed, I'd prefer to be able to go wherever I want to without having to be forced to see this display of violence.

This also has me thinking that this city needs rules and laws, preferably sooner rather than later. Otherwise we'll be killing people next and offering their blood to the gods, or hurting each other. Hell, if some of us decide to build a farm, who's to stop others from breaking in and stealing away the animals there to "sacrifice" them too? What measures are there in place to prevent murder, rape, theft or violence? I realize all the people and gods here are fairly young, but that's all the more reason why these laws should be established now. And it doesn't look like the gods will be the ones putting them in place without the proper input.

I can only hope there are enough reasonable people around to want to weigh in and help with this. I'm definitely willing to work together on it.

[ Chizuru's tone makes it very obvious that she thinks they don't. Or that she really, really hopes they don't, either way. Surely they were just that cruel and gruesome because they didn't understand what they were doing. ]

[ Peter is basically going +10000 at Jim's reply. He already voices his opinion about the sacrifices in his own reply, so he focuses on the other points as to not vore people.]

Sigyn's district has a farmland. The Grearc Expanse or something like that? I'm terrible at Norse names. But the thing is, we have the installations already, it's a matter of organization and implementation.

And I agree that we need some basics, even if it's just a general: murder, raping and pillaging is baaaad.

Uh, it totally was and I am totally taking it and running with it and I am TOOOOTALLY telling her you said it.

That's good. We could talk to her about getting something productive running there. We have a few animals on your ship, plus there are still a couple more animals roaming around the city freely. Organizing the space shouldn't be too difficult, given that there aren't that many people here yet and the choice of animals is fairly limited.

I should point out, though, while I do know how to tend to animals and whatever they can provide us with, I don't really think I'd want to kill them to sell their meat. I guess we could have someone on the farm willing to do that, since there are probably plenty of people around who eat meat.

[ Not him, at least not anymore, but he's sure not everyone was as affected as he was. ]

[ Peter's actually facepalming for a few seconds. ]

She will get mad and then turn us into maggots or something. [ Wait, what??? ] DON'T GET ME INTO THIS! [ You kinda got yourself into it, Peter. ]

I hope she's open to the idea. Particularly because Finn, Mary, and Fran also brought the animals they saved, so it's more than a few animals in the lower section of my ship. But ey, Bowie got used to living in the ship so it doesn't scream unless he wants me to sing for him. [ Yes, he's talking about the piggy. ] I blame you for that.

Yeah, I am not ready for that either. After this mess, thinking of meat makes me wanna gag so you have the right idea. We can ask the locals and, if we are lucky, find someone with common sense.
