cold weather PSA from your local doctor! [video]
[Now that we’re officially in the middle of winter, it’s a good time to make a PSA about staying warm and healthy in one of the harshest seasons of the year. She should probably have done this earlier but ah well. RL is a drag the Public Service Announcement capabilities of technologies are new to Wen Qing.]
Greetings, Wanderers.
[It’s a public announcement. In her time you did it by forcing everyone to show up at a meeting hall. So Wen Qing’s speaking more formally than she usually does.]
Winter is a dangerous time, and as we are a varied group some of you may not have gone through winter before. Cold temperatures make the human body more vulnerable to illness and infection, and if you really don’t watch yourself they can kill. So keep warm and watch yourself carefully. If you experience numbness, dizziness, an irregular heartbeat, or other unusual things- find someone to help you and get to the Heillhaus if you can.
Secondly, not all of you are human. I’m not sure about how other beings react to the cold, or in general. If you have specific needs I’d appreciate if you could report it to someone at the Heillhaus so the physicians are aware. If you practice hibernatory behaviour over the winter I’d advise you tell someone about it too, so people don’t get alarmed.
That’s all. Thanks for listening.

[It’s louder than she'd like, but the statement has utterly thrown her off-guard. Of all the Wanderers, Chizuru was the last person she expected to be non-human. When someone was a demon or a spirit, you were supposed to be able to tell- even Ye Zun’s dabble in dangerous arts shows up in his hair.
She's not mad, per se- just stunned. This is just stunned yelling.]
Heavens, this is- unexpected. Pardon my outburst.
[She’s still processing it.]
What are you, if not human?
no subject
Ah..
[ Somehow it feels even more shameful to say it now. Wen Qing is going to think she's weird, right? This is exactly why she always keeps this fact hidden, because she doesn't want to be seen as different from everyone else.
Chizuru's gaze turns downwards, staring at the floor as she speaks. ]
I'm actually a demon..
sorry for the delay! RL's kinda rough on my end rn
But you’re so ordinary- no, I mean, [uh] perhaps it’s my folly that I never considered it. I should be able to tell.
[At her cultivational level, she should have sensed something. But she hadn’t noticed anything and of course her sense of her supernatural had gone away with her other abilities from home. Wen Qing should’ve thought about that.]
According to conventional wisdom, demons would pick some kind of beautiful young woman for a human form. With a weirdly long list of talents. Not that you’re not pretty, but above-average looks is modest for a demon. I’m surprised- I thought it would’ve been someone like Ye Zun.
it's totally fine! take all the time you need
It's a good thing that Chizuru is already convinced she looks very, very mediocre at best, or she might have cried hearing that right after confessing something that vulnerable already. But the potential hurt those words could bring is thankfully lost in the realisation that at least Wen Qing isn't freaking out or calling her a monster... (Yet, anyway.) ]
A-- Ah, well.. I never really got to pick.. [ Is that really a thing demons do? It's already been hard enough learning things about demon culture back home while growing up as if she were a regular human for years and years. ] I was just born with this.

The humanoid form is supposed to be a demon’s alter ego- once a demon is strong enough they can fashion a human form with their life force to traverse the human world. [Belatedly, Wen Qing realises the foolishness of repeating her theoretical knowledge in front of a real demon.] That's what the books say.
Then again, our original magic is gone, as you've said… it's pointless to have this kind of discussion.
[She takes a deep breath; the talking seems to drain the last of the emotional shock out of her. It's back to business for Wen Qing- but not really, for her silent contemplation can easily be mistaken as a new weight in the air between them. Because undeniably, this changes things. But Wen Qing can take that change in stride. She's had worse happen to closer people, she's willing to be friends with a demon. They just need to re-check the logistics.]
...while you’re here, are there any other secrets I should know about?
no subject
Briefly she wishes Sen was here. The princess would be so much better at talking about these sorts of things.. She nervously frets by playing with the end of her sleeve idly. ]
I.. I don't think so. [ Chizuru's speaking a little slowly, mostly since she's trying to gauge the other's reaction right now. It doesn't seem too bad, but she still can't help but worry. Especially considering Wen Qing actually knows about demons and all - does she think less of her now? ] I'm sorry if I disappointed you by not telling you about it sooner.. I was taught to keep it a secret.
[ Which ended up spiralling into her keeping it secret out of shame and fear in the end. ]

There are reasons for demons to keep their natures secret. Many are valid. While I would have preferred to know this sooner…. I don’t blame you for keeping quiet.
[She’s reasonable about this, as she always is. It’d been a nasty shock at first, these things always are, but she is a woman of science and she likes to pride herself in lacking the hysteria that most cultivators have. But most importantly it’s easy to lose your fear of the otherworldly when you have family who become like that.
It occurs to her that something like this should be said.]
Neither do I think less of you for being a demon. I’ve had people close to me become creatures of yin, I’m not very afraid of them.
no subject
.. thank you. It's very kind of you to say that.
[ Since not everyone would be able to do so. ]
Although I'm sure there's not much reason to be afraid of me to begin with. I'm.. not very scary. [ At least she's self aware. ]
no subject
[What is this, forcing her to think about emotional things???? Like kindness?????? She doesn’t like that. ]
Perhaps. [have some awkward shuffling.]
That might be good for humans, but- [She finds a practical enough topic to change to, but she’s not stupid and she knows this is a significant moment- and she can’t help but be awkward about it, swinging between being too businesslike and slowing down, not knowing how to be comforting. Where’s Wei Wuxian. Isn’t he better at this kind of thing?]- for demons, you probably want to get stronger. Oh- no, if you want to stay among humans I suppose your priorities would be different. But you’ll make enemies eventually.

For a moment Chizuru ponders how much to say. This time not because of secrets as much as it's more just that she doesn't want to dump all her personal problems straight into Wen Qing's lap like that. But on the other hand, maybe it's for the best if she does know? Just on the offchance he'll appear here. ]
Well.. [ Chizuru definitely looks kind of awkward still as she talks. ] I actually already have one-- sort of, I guess.
There's this demon.. his name is Chikage Kazama. He insists on making me his bride, but..
[ She makes a vague hand gesture that seems to suggest that nope, she doesn't want that, no thanks, without having to say as much in words. ]
But he can be very violent and unpredictable. If a man with blonde hair and red eyes shows up and calls himself that, then please be careful. [ Yes, Wen Qing, that's because she cares about you and doesn't want you to get hurt!! Accept these feelings! ]
no subject
[All of a sudden she’s much more okay with this?? Wen Qing’s very comfortable with the idea of hostile demons. It may be a little concerning.]
That sort of thing, a strong-enough demon would be able to chase him off. If he comes here, I can deal with him for you.
[This probably isn’t the reaction Chizuru was looking for, but Wen Qing cares about her back and is willing to fight a demon for her...? This is fine. At least, Wen Qing thinks it’s fine, she has two more castmates and she genuinely doesn’t think a demon could beat three cultivators.]
no subject
Y.. You can fight demons?
[ It's not as if it was impossible in her world, but it sure required some.. modifications, let's say. ]
Sorry, I don't mean to underestimate you or anything like that, but.. he's really strong.
no subject
[Wen Qing says straightforwardly; perhaps her confidence is a sign of arrogance, perhaps not. But she truly believes she can.]
Myself, Wei Wuxian from Heimdall, and Lan Wangji from Odin- we’re trained in the cultivation of martial and spiritual arts. Cultivators are the ones who deal with the malicious beings in our world.
Admittedly, we’re not the most experienced. If it’s a really high-level demon we’ll have to be cautious. But the other two are very good for their age.
no subject
[ Not that she's doubting their abilities. But it just feels important to Chizuru to convey as much, just in case they don't underestimate Kazama and end up hurt or worse.. ]
But maybe you'd be able to handle him if you'd all work together. Back home he is mostly a problem because everyone I know is just human and no match for him.
no subject
If you're unsure, why don't you find myself or Wei Wuxian at Heimdallhaus and challenge us to a spar or two?
[She would get out her sword now to back up her words, but she's obviously not carrying that kind of weaponry in a hospital, that's ridiculous. A time and place for everything. Chizuru could benefit from the exposure to combat, too.]
Why do you say he's a high-level demon?
no subject
[ She shakes her head though, as if to dismiss it. ]
And.. well, I obviously don't know what a high-level demon would be in your world. But.. for example, if you were to compare him with me, I'm very weak.
[ Chizuru may be a demon, but sure has none of that demon strength.. So clearly she's willing to admit to as much. She doesn't see herself as a strong person at all. ]
But he's very strong. Stronger than anyone I've ever seen.
